A Pair of Top 5 Finishes in the final two events of the season propelled Eric Williams of Honesdale Golf Club to a fourth straight and ninth overall AGA/GAP Player of the Year.
Williams entered the year's penultimate event, the AGA/GPA Men's Coal Scuttle, 76 points shy of the stop spot.
In the Coal Scuttle's individual competition, Williams played himself into contention for that title before finishing tied for fourth. He would earn 178 POY Points. In the year's final tournament, the Carlyle Robinson Fall Four-all at Elkview Country Club, Williams, along with partner James Gardas, tied for fourth to earn 135 points.
Overall, Williams' amassed 1,242 points, 117 points clear of runner-up Eamon Evans.
"I'm 47 years old and to still be contending for Player of the Year is all about consistency to me. That's what I aim for," said Williams. "My forte is individual medal play. I knew the Coal Scuttle had a major amount of points. I put myself in the mix but then kind of stalled out. Conditions were so difficult at Elkview with strong winds for the Carlyle Robinson. I thought anything under par would finish in the Top 5."
Other top finishes in AGA/GAP events for Williams were a victory in the John Moore Memorial Tournament and a tie for second-place in the Ben Marshall Spring Four-Ball, both with Gardas, and a second-place outing in the Over/Under 50 Tournament.
However, it's the events he didn't gain any points in that put a bow on 2019.
"I take a lot of pride making the cut in the State Amateur at my age and also making the state Sigel semifinals." said Williams, of Honesdale, Pa. "In GAP, I played in all the Majors this year. I had a really good round of golf in the Patterson Cup and finished Top 5. And being invited to compete on the Philadelphia Challenge Matches and Mason-Dixon Matches teams was a bonus. That was awesome."
